Born and raised in Uganda, Michaiah was spotted from his local church, Namagabi Church of Uganda by the late Michael Kalule who was then the Choirmaster of Namirembe Cathedral Choir in Kampala. Kalule who was impressed by the boy accompanist and at the age of 10, allowed Michaiah to join the prestigious Cathedral Choir where he was trained to read music as well as play the piano and later the organ. He was sadly murdered in 1982 and under the circumstances, Michaiah with his associates had the responsibility to take care of the choir until 1986 when he was officially appointed as the Cathedral Organist.
Michaiah’s Musical education was furthered in the early 90’s by attaining an Associate of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) diploma as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree with First Class Honours in Music awarded in England. For over 20 years, he has been the organist of St Johns with St Andrews Church Waterloo where he has also supported the Okusinza Mu Luganda choir to this day.
His Choral works have been mainly written to facilitate this choir with a few exceptions like ‘The Holy Week’ which was compiled and produced in the memory of his late mother who passed away on Palm Sunday in 2006. His compositions such as Namugongo have gained popularity and now widely sung by a variety of Ugandan choirs. He hopes that this website will serve to guide the interests of these choirs and independent musicians that are looking for more from his compositions. He has made the sheet music readily available for viewing with audio and vocal backups sung together with his wife Joyce for training purposes. Sheet copies of music can also officially be obtained from Hossana Choral singers, Masaka.
Michaiah’s music career has been inspired by the collective support of role models and pays more tribute to the following:
His Late parents John and Margaret Kityo for the inspiring excellence at playing the harmonium and believing in his talent; the late Rev Jonathan Wandera who was his first choirmaster at Namagabi COU together with the Late Rev Bulafu for allowing him to practice on the harmonium. His paternal aunt the late Mrs Hannah Musisi for the Godly parental role together with the late Dr & Mrs Ndugwa. The list is endless but it is worth mentioning the late P. Lwasa and M. Kalule for settling him well into Namirembe Cathedral Choir; the Late W. Serukenya who allowed him to look into his compositions, Late Bishops M.Kawuma and M.Bugimbi for all the encouragement, and will forever be grateful to the late E. Batte, E. Musoke and A. Waliggo. He takes pride in his family for the various contributions to his music but not forgetting all others from St Johns and OML church choirs.
